modern slavery information
it is easy to believe that slavery is a thing of the past. i know we all want to. at one point, i made my facebook status something about fighting slavery and people assumed i was a) joking or b) deluded into believing i was capable of time travel. the truth is that slavery is alive and well. it is, in fact, more alive, more powerful, more ugly, and more widespread than ever.
it is estimated that 27 million people are currently enslaved. that number is higher than at the height of the transatlantic slave trade...and it is probably a conservative estimate.
but wasn't slavery eradicated? isn't it illegal? no. and yes.
it is illegal in most countries.
but it is still practiced.
so it is hidden.
in darkness.
where it can keep getting darker and darker.
we participate several times a day without even knowing it.
that ends now.

education is the first step...taking this hidden, dark injustice out of the darkness and into the light is the beginning of putting it to an end.
